Infrastructure Improvements Planned for Superior Avenue Railroad Bridge

Cleveland may soon see significant upgrades to the railroad infrastructure near the intersection of Superior Avenue and Central Avenue S.E. An emergency ordinance, filed as 770-2026, proposes giving consent to the Norfolk Southern Corporation to move forward with improving the Superior Avenue Railroad Bridge. The project involves replacing the bridge and the railroad track, as well as replacing and repositioning the support columns located under the bridge on Superior Avenue between Central Avenue S.E. and East 26th Street.

According to the legislative records, these improvements are slated to be completed at no cost to the City of Cleveland. The ordinance would authorize the Director of Capital Projects to enter into the necessary agreements to facilitate these improvements. Norfolk Southern, which is one of two major railroad systems serving Greater Cleveland, operates the Cleveland Line through Ohio and Pennsylvania. The city is currently reviewing the proposal through the 770-2026-Revised Legislative Summary-Norfolk Southern Corporation Superior Bridge and other supporting documents provided to City Council.

The ordinance is currently in the Administrative Review stage and has been referred to the City Council committee.
