Cleveland to Lead Regional Grant Effort for Law Enforcement Support

The Cleveland Department of Public Safety is preparing to manage a new regional grant aimed at bolstering local law enforcement through equipment, services, and personnel. Under the emergency ordinance identified as Ord. No. 684-2026, the Director of Public Safety is authorized to apply for and accept a $711,169 grant from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, for the FY 2025 Byrne Justice Assistance Grant. As the fiscal agent for the funds, the City of Cleveland will coordinate the distribution of the award to several neighboring municipalities and Cuyahoga County.

According to the 684-2026-Legislative Summary-FY25 JAG - Local Solicitation Grant, the funding is distributed among several partners to advance basic law enforcement efforts. The City of Cleveland will receive $532,562, which is allocated toward personnel costs ($477,336), travel ($18,040), and equipment ($37,186). Remaining funds will be distributed to Cuyahoga County ($100,000), East Cleveland ($15,396), Euclid ($15,633), Garfield Heights ($15,328), Cleveland Heights ($10,445), Maple Heights ($10,309), and Parma ($11,496). This is an annual grant that the City has participated in since 2005, and this specific award requires no matching funds and is scheduled to end on September 30, 2028.
