Cleveland to Receive Nearly $660,000 for Public Safety Equipment

Cleveland is set to bolster its emergency response capabilities through a new regional security grant. City Council has passed emergency ordinance 593-2026, which allows the Director of Public Safety to apply for and accept $659,479 from Cuyahoga County via the Fiscal Year 2025 Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) Grant. This funding is intended to enhance regional preparedness in high-density areas by focusing on specialized equipment and emergency planning.

According to the 593-2026-Legislative Summary-FY25 UASI Grant, the grant serves as a "pass-thru" from FEMA through the State of Ohio to Cuyahoga County. While the city will utilize the funds, the county will handle the actual equipment purchases and then transfer the assets to the City of Cleveland. The allocation is split across three major departments: $92,400 for EMS equipment, such as helmets and response kits for mass casualty incidents; $180,774 for Fire department AreaRAE Rapid Deployment Kits; and $256,000 for a Police department traffic barricade system. Additionally, $130,305 will be used to equip three boats with transponders, antennas, Doppler radar, and FLIR technology for Fire and Police use. The legislation notes there is no local match required for this competitive grant.
