Cleveland Proposes Updates to Waste Collection and Disposal Rules

The City of Cleveland is looking to update how trash and recycling are managed to ensure clearer rules for all residents. An emergency ordinance, identified as File No. 591-2026, was introduced to amend several sections of the city's existing waste collection and disposal laws. These changes aim to improve how the city handles citations and to make sure the current rules match the way waste services are actually being operated on a daily basis.

According to the 591-2026 Legislative Summary, the Department of Public Works is seeking these amendments to address recurring issues with illegal dumping and improper waste storage. The legislation specifically targets several sections of Chapter 551 of the Codified Ordinances to establish clearer standards for residential waste set-out, how bulk items are disposed of, and the regulations for licensed hauling operations. By refining these codes, the city intends to increase service efficiency and help prevent delays during waste collection.
