Cleveland Recognizes Food Allergy Awareness Week

The City of Cleveland has officially designated May 10-16, 2026, and every year moving forward, as Food Allergy Awareness Week. This recognition, passed via Emergency Resolution 582-2026, aims to highlight the growing impact of food allergies on local families and the importance of public preparedness.

According to the 582-2026-FOR ADOPTION-Slife - Resolution declaring May 10-16 Food Allergy Awareness Week, the resolution addresses the fact that more than 33 million Americans live with food allergies. The document notes that nine specific foods—milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, sesame, fish, and crustacean shellfish—account for approximately 90 percent of all food allergy reactions in the United States. These reactions can range from mild symptoms to anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening condition. The City Council expressed that increased awareness is critical for ensuring safety and inclusion within schools, childcare settings, restaurants, and other public spaces. As part of the resolution, the Clerk of Council is directed to send copies of the measure to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), a national nonprofit organization.
