New Parking Rates and Cash Payment Options Approved for Cleveland Streets
Cleveland residents and commuters will see changes to on-street parking rules following the passage of emergency Ordinance No. 522-2026. This legislation adjusts how paid parking is managed across the city, specifically addressing feedback from residents, business owners, and employees regarding the recent rollout of the city's paid parking program. The changes aim to ensure neighborhood parking remains more affordable than downtown areas and provides more accessible payment methods.
The ordinance introduces several specific updates to parking rates and accessibility. To accommodate different payment preferences, the city must now ensure that a method for paying with cash and coins is available within 600 feet of every individual street parking space, according to the 522-2026-Legislative Summary. For neighborhood areas located outside the Downtown Parking Area, rates are set at $1.00 per hour for up to eight hours, and up to $3.00 per hour for any time exceeding eight hours. These neighborhood rates apply Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
In the Downtown Parking Area, the authorized times for charging parking are Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Fridays from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with Sunday charging reserved for special events. Additionally, the law now requires that any new parking meter zone established after May 15, 2026, must receive formal approval from City Council.
The ordinance has passed and is now in effect. Residents can look for a report from the Director of Public Works one year after the effective date, which will provide City Council with implementation details and parking data.
