Cleveland Secures New Contract for Solid Waste Disposal

The City of Cleveland has moved to ensure that municipal trash services continue without interruption through a new agreement for waste transfer and disposal. Under the recently passed emergency ordinance, identified as Ord. No. 470-2026, the Department of Public Works is authorized to enter into requirement contracts to manage the movement of solid waste from the city’s Ridge Road Transfer Facility to various landfills, transfer stations, or material recovery facilities.

According to the 470-2026-Legislative Summary-Solid Waste, this new contract is estimated to cost approximately $9,000,000 and will be funded through General Fund Operating Funds. The agreement establishes an initial term of two years, with three additional one-year options to renew that can be exercised by the Director of Public Works. This legislation replaces the current contract, RC2022-32, held by Lorain County Landfill, LLC (Republic Services), which saw $7,439,040.00 in expenditures last year. These services are managed by the Division of Waste Collection and Disposal within the Department of Public Works.

Ord. No. 470-2026 has officially passed. Residents can watch for future updates regarding the specific contractors selected to fulfill these requirement contracts as the Director of Public Works exercises the terms of the agreement.
